Epiphany Church Tutoring Project

Few would disagree that education is the key to escaping poverty. Forney Charities is making a difference in ending generational poverty, one student at a time, by funding an after-school tutoring program for motivated high school students.

This program, The Epiphany Readers Tutoring Project in Los Angeles, provides SAT test preparation instruction specifically for those students who otherwise would not be able to afford this type of program. Students meet once per week with college professors and are tutored in the areas of reading and writing. Since all of the students who are currently enrolled speak a language other than English in the home, this type of support is vitally important in helping them learn and master key principles that lead to higher SAT scores. With improved scores, their educational options are expanded and with that, their prospects for meaningful employment and an escape from poverty increase.

Since many of these students are the first in their families to pursue a college education, each student also receives guidance counseling services as part of this program. Students are taught how to determine which colleges are right for them, navigating the application process, and how to research and apply for scholarships.

Forney Charities is increasing the reach of this program to include other local communities with student populations that can benefit from this type of instruction
